I'd like to first try to explain the apparent confusion that arises when describing the locations of Amelia Island and Fernandina Beach.  Amelia Island is just that, an Island. It's about 13 miles long and 2 miles wide. It's about 10 miles east of I-95 (exit 373).  It's just over the Shave Bridge, across from the mainland, on A1A (SR200). Part of the island consists of the City of Fernandina Beach, which has it's own little City Hall and Police Station. Included within the city limits is a 50 square block area, designated as the Historic District. However, the entire Island is not part of the City of Fernandina Beach. The remainder of the Island is known as unincorporated Fernandina Beach, which means it belongs to the County, not the City. Properties that are not within the jurisdiction of the City of Fernandina Beach are not subject to the City real estate taxes. These areas get their police services from the Nassau County Sheriff's Dept.

The mainland east from I-95, up to the bridge consists mainly of the Town of Yulee. and (this is where is gets confusing) a portion of unincorporated Fernandina Beach.

Prior to a few years ago, most of mainland area surrounding Amelia Island was pretty much all known as Yulee, until some developers made deals with the County to extend the unincorporated portion of Fernandina Beach onto the mainland.  A few of those developments are; Amelia National, North Hampton, Oyster Bay Harbour, Amelia Walk, Amelia Concourse, Flora Parke, and Lofton Pointe, which share the Fernandina Beach address and zip code, although not part of the City of Fernandina Beach.

FORT CLINCH STATE PARK

A part of the park system since 1935, Fort Clinch is one of the most well-preserved 19th century forts in the country. Although no battles were fought here, it was garrisoned during both the Civil and Spanish-American wars. During the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps began preserving and rebuilding many of the structures of the abandoned fort. Daily tours with period reenactors depicting garrison life bring the fort to life for visitors. Sunbathing, swimming, and beachcombing are popular activities at the beach. Anglers can fish from the pier or take advantage of excellent surf fishing. Hikers and bicyclists can enjoy a six-mile trail through the park.
